Mariners Do That Thing They Do

“We think we’re good, and we think we’re closer than we’ve ever been,” Dipoto said. “And this was always our plan.”

Jerry Dipoto, 10/7/2021

The 2022 Seattle Mariners were the team the Pacific Northwest had waited a generation for. On the back of a historic 14-game winning streak they won 90 games for the second straight season. For once, that above average win total was enough to sneak into baseball’s postseason. The streak, finally, was broken. Better yet, we were told, it was just the beginning.

“I work for Jerry, so very active. I think we need to get better. We had an awesome year. We’re really excited about the progress we made. We also finished 16 games behind the Astros. The goal was not to get to the playoffs; the goal is to win a World Series. And we want to get better. And that means better everywhere.”

In order to bridge that 16 game gap here is the list of transactions the Mariners made between the end of the 2022 season and Opening Day 2023:

November 9 SEA Received: SP – Easton McGee BOS Received: Cash Considerations

November 16 SEA Received: Teoscar Hernandez (RF) TOR Received: Erik Swanson (RP), Adam Macko (Minors SP)

November 17 SEA Received: Cooper Hummel (C/OF) ARI Received: Kyle Lewis (DH)

December 2 SEA Received: Kolten Wong (2B) MIL Received: Winker (OF/DH), Toro (UTL)

November 9 Gabe Speier (RP) – Claimed off waivers

November 22 Jose Rodriguez (RP, 0.0 fWAR) – Minor League Deal

November 28 Trevor Gott (RP, 0.6 fWAR) – $1.2m

December 10 Tommy Milone (SP, -0.1 fWAR) – Minor League Deal

January 9 Mike Ford (1B/DH, 0.5 fWAR) – Minor League Deal

January 19 Tommy La Stella (INF, -0.2 fWAR) – $0.725m

“This is the deepest team we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Servais said. “From our starting pitching to the bullpen to the regular lineup to the guys on the bench, they can all play and they’ll play a huge role in allowing us to get back to the playoffs — and hopefully, like I said, winning the division.”

As the Mariners have spent the most anticipated season in recent franchise history locked in an eternal waltz with .500, here are the transaction the team has made:

March 31 SEA Received: Nick Solak (OF) CIN Received: Cash Considerations

July 3 SEA Received: Zach Muckenhirn (RP) NYM Received: GOTT (RP), Flexen (SP)

July 26 SEA Received: Trent Thornton (RP) TOR Received: Mason McCoy (IF/OF)

July 31 SEA Received: Canzone (1B/OF), Rojas (INF), Bliss (2B/Minors) ARI Received: Sewald (RP)

July 31 SEA Received: Sweet Relief SFG Received: Pollock (OF/DH), Mathias (UTL/Minors)

August 1 SEA Received: Eduard Bazardo (RP) BAL Received: Logan Rinehart (RP)*

“We could have gone out there with a bag of money and a ton of prospects and we still couldn’t have really done a whole lot outside of what we did,” Dipoto said. “We knew we were going to be threading a needle in terms of trying to make our club better now while also building a bridge forward without tapping into our prospect system in any meaningful way.”

The Mariners lost yesterday to the Red Sox 6-4. They are 55-52, fourth place and six games back in the AL West, 3.5 games back in the Wild Card. On the pregame show before last night’s game Jerry Dipoto indicated he spent the last 20 minutes of the trade deadline finishing his Immaculate Grid.

As of this writing the Seattle Mariners remain the only team in Major League Baseball never to appear in a World Series.

  1. Hi.
Seems there should be a discussion around Julio. By people who know a lot more than me, he is supposed to be a “potential” 5 tool player.

However, he is only playing like a 2 tool player–speed and defense.

His power and average numbers don’t seem to be where you would characterize them as “tools” in the 5 tool sense.

His arm seems very inaccurate (and certainly not a “tool”). Examples are his throw to 3rd a couple games ago after Murphy launched a throw meant for second to CF AND his short center throw last week as he was moving toward home plate. There was a slow guy on 3rd and Julio (again in short center and momentum moving toward home plate) threw the ball 8 or 10 feet up the first base line–runner scored.

Also, he must lead the team in 9th inning strike outs.

  2. Hey Nathan, I’ve been reading words that you’ve been making about the Mariners for basically my entire adult life and there’s one thing that I want to say to you.

Only a fool would doubt the Seattle Mariners and also you’re the best. I hope this year is as fun for you as it is for me and that nobody has succeeded in their attempts to get you down.
