Kevin Mather Dares You To Quit The Mariners

Back in 2018, when we all learned that Mariners President Kevin Mather had settled a sexual harassment case prior to being promoted to his current role, we wrote this:

“I have loved the Mariners, and baseball, all my life. I don’t know the breaking point. Maybe it’s this, maybe it’s a long ways past this. I just can’t stop thinking about the first day these women came to Safeco Field, the thrill of starting a new position in a highly competitive field, and how that was ruined by the libido of men who have never thought about these women, probably before or since. That struggle is mine. Each fan will have their own.”

When the team was accused of systemic racism and misogyny by Director of High Performance Dr. Lorena Martin, we wrote this:

“I wasn’t sure where the line is for myself or others; the moment when we simply throw our hands up and worry ourselves with something, anything else. I still don’t know. All I know is, regardless of who said what about who to who, after today that line is getting closer.”

This morning a video of Kevin Mather speaking to the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club earlier this month was uploaded by, I assume, an innocent and well-meaning member of that same organization. Here are a few things that he said:

It is going to be a wet and windy Sunday in the Pacific Northwest. Nonetheless I am going to stop this blog now and go sit outside in horizontal rain and 45 degrees so that I can celebrate the birthdays of a few dear friends. It is going to be cold and miserable, but being safely and responsibly among them is a far better use of my time and energy than spending any more of it here telling you that this team doesn’t deserve you, me, or any of us. We have a choice, and I’m making mine.

Mariners. Fire Kevin Mather. Immediately. Or we’re done.
