Don't Make Me Tap The Sign

The Seattle Mariners Just Need to do One Thing

By now, you have probably heard that noted piece of stale fecal matter, and coincidentally, Seattle Mariners Team President, Kevin Mather spoke with the esteemed members of the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club and proceeded to get himself into hot water.

He insulted foreign-born players (from multiple continents no less), acknowledged manipulating service time, said goodbye to Kyle Seager, and committed plenty of other verbal transgressions in a rambling 45-minute interview that no one asked for.

The story is that Kevin Mather said the quiet part out loud. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Rich white people in power like Kevin Mather tend to not have to worry about repercussions. After all, this is a man who was accused of sexual harassment and creating a toxic work environment, and promoted through it all because the legal settlements deemed everything kosher.

Considering that Kevin Mather is, has been, and really always be a horrible, worthless human being, it is of little shock that his “apology” was lacking at best, pathetic at its face, and laughable for its sincerity.

The obvious solution here is that Kevin Mather needs to resign, immediately. The other obvious solution is the Seattle Mariners need to fire his wrinkled ass, immediately. The fact that Mather doesn’t think he needs to resign shows you exactly how pervasive the rot is in this man’s pool of diarrhea for a brain.

Alas, obvious has never been in the rule book for the enigma that is the Seattle Mariners. This is a team that, playoff drought aside, has generated essentially nothing but bad press through the accusations of sexism, racism, and most other -isms that are plaguing society right now, all the while, enabling rich, white, powerful men like Kevin Mather by refusing to hold them accountable for their words and actions.

This isn’t a complex moment in which words were being taken out of context. This is an old white man with the sheer audacity (and stupidity) to engage in that “locker room” talk because our society does not ever punish the people who actually deserve it. That this happened in front of a Rotary Club, a space for the rich to air their grievances about how the world wrongs them so, is not lost on a single one of us.

Kevin Mather’s Wikipedia entry has six paragraphs. Two of the six are devoted to him being a sexist and a racist. This is the Seattle Mariners current team president at this very moment.

If Kevin Mather is still an employee of the Seattle Mariners tomorrow, the ownership of this organization is no better than he is. They are the enablers of his behavior. They are the caretakers of his privilege. They are the breeders of his toxicity. And they don’t deserve a single one of us to ever spend a second caring about them again.

  1. Mather is everything wrong with baseball. Like everything else in life, he isn’t the cause but a symptom. Rich old white men doing everything they can to increase profits while maintaining status quo. I mean, shit, they allowed players to take a knee or wear a shirts that say “BLM” and “Equality” as virtue signaling. They have zero interest on helping race/gender equality, but they will absolutely put out a statement because that’s cheaper. I’m surprised the owners didn’t put on traditional African clothing and kneel like Nancy Pelosi did. I don’t think there is anything that can be done to change Mariners (or baseball for that matter) unless there is total systemic change. The only way to get these guys out permanently is through community owned teams. My rant is over. Fuck the Mariners unless I see heads roll.
